A Discovery of Witches
by Deborah Harkness
A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.
Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.
Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series-with an extra serving of historical realism.

MY RATING:-🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Honestly i don't know from where to start because this book was so full of awesomeness!!
this was such a great book its one of my all time favourites now i love this book so much the characters the world building was just so epic that you couldn't help but fall in love with it.
okay lets start with the world building the world was just so unique in its own way the book is set in our world in our era only but the things deborah did to explain the existence of witches, vampires, daemons was just so epic like there are genetic mutations in all of them they have like one or two more pairs of chromosomes that gives them there powers another fact that i loved about this book was that how she explained vampires like vampires could walk in daylight and what not and honestly her world makes more sense than any other novels like the way she interweaved genetics with fantasy was epic and for the first in my life i wanted to learn biology because you know i'm more of a physics and maths person and also the fact that i suck at biology so yeah.
another plus point was that the history in this book was just so great like i hate history,i suck at history even in schools but mash it up with science and fantasy i'll devour it like a choco chip cookie.and that my friends is what happened with this book.
coming to the characters our first main character is diana who is a witch and a historian as well and i personally liked her character very much because she didn't want to use her powers as a witch because of what happened in her past and that gives more solidity(is that a word well it is now!)to her character also she was like so fierce and bad ass in her own way that i couldn't help but love her.
coming to matthew well he is a vampire who is about 1500 years old and let me tell you i am more of a werewolf person but after this book i love vampires matthew is just so bossy and thinks so highly of himself that he did make me roll my eyes quite a few times but the way he protected diana and showed her the truth that she was using her powers all along begged me to like his character and the rest was done with his knowledge and hotness look i disliked vampires because i thought they were just beauty with no brains but did this vampire prove me wrong and also i feel like SJM's fey character are so similar to matthew in all their bossiness and protectiveness and i love sarah's all characters so loving him was inevitable also i'm not going to lie here in almost half of the book i was thinking that dammm why can't my biology teacher be a hot vampire i sure as hell wouldn't suck at biology then!
the side characters were really great i loved Diana's aunt i loved marcus and i loved Diana's house honestly my things to have in future have 3 items:-riptide,kell's coat and diana's house.
but all in all this was a really great book highly recommend it to everyone trust me on this you wouldn't regret picking this up!
